The Oscars have been one of the most prestigious film awards for almost a 100 years now. Avid film watchers, or anyone in general, excitedly wait and watch to see if their favourites will win one of the most respected awards in the film industry.

The Academy Awards which are now known as the Oscars has been an award show since 1929 and has been going strong every year since then. The awards are presented each year for technological and artistic value for the film industry and are one of the oldest global entertainment awards ceremonies. The first ever Oscars were held on May 16 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel then the after party of the night was held at the Mayfair Hotel where 15 of the statues were later awarded to directors, filmmakers and other various artists in the movie/film industry. A few of the awards that were presented at the first Academy Awards were for Best Actor, Best Actress, Cinematography, Most Outstanding Picture, etc.

This year it is the 96th Academy Awards which will be presented in March with many categories to be won again. Awards ranging from Best Actor to Best Visual Effects are up for grabs this year. This year comes with the epic World War II film Oppenheimer directed by Christopher Nolan and the Barbie sensation directed by Greta Gerwig, both generating hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office, packed theatres worldwide and now they have both received multiple nominations for this years Oscars. This year, Oppenheimer received the most nominations of 13 categories and Poor Things received 11 nominations.

The Oscars often incite surprise outrage from fans regarding the nominations and winners. Last year this occurred when Jamie Lee Curtis won Best Supporting Actress for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once when many felt that two of the other nominees, Angela Bassett and Stephanie Hsu deserved to win for their respective roles. This year there have been a few surprises involving the nominations. Particularly, many were surprised that Greta Gerwig was not nominated for her directing role in Barbie and Margot Robbie, the lead of the film, did not receive any nominations either.

The Oscars are always anticipated every year and people are always looking forward to watching the awards take place every year from seeing who’s best dressed to who will take home a prestigious Oscar each year. In Canada, the Oscars can be viewed via CTV. No doubt, many will tune it to watch the event unfold!
