The rise of “phonk” music

The rise of phonk music

In recent years, generation Z has been growing increasingly interested in a particular kind of music known as “phonk”. Phonk, which combines elements of underground hip-hop with chopped and screwed techniques and distorted sounds, has struck a deep chord with Gen Z’s desire for individuality and authenticity. The genre is known for its innate ability to take listeners back in time, summoning feelings of nostalgia.

The origins of phonk can be traced back to Memphis rap in the early 1990s when artists like DJ Screw and Three 6 Mafia were experimenting with slowed and eerie beats. These trailblazers popularized the distinctive sound of phonk, and their work was later revived through social media platforms. Short video clips featuring phonk tracks have gone viral on Instagram, introducing the genre to a wider audience and solidifying its place in the musical landscape. On TikTok, the #phonk hashtag has received over 7.5 billion views. Google shows an even more astounding picture, with searches for phonk rising by over 200% annually to a daily average of about 255,000 searches.

Several emerging artists, such as Odetari, 6arelyhuman, and Kordhell are at the forefront, contributing to the genre’s resurgence and gaining millions of listeners for their innovative approach to phonk music. These artists have seamlessly blended elements of trap, lo-fi, and vintage samples, creating a fresh and unique sound that appeals to both old and new fans of the genre. Their success also inspired a new generation of aspiring phonk producers to experiment and push the genre’s boundaries even further. Newer artists have embraced the genre and released music on platforms such as SoundCloud and YouTube.

The rise of phonk music is a cultural phenomenon. Gen Z has embraced the genre’s gritty aesthetic, using it as a form of self-expression and rebellion. This has led to a thriving online community of phonk enthusiasts who share and promote their favourite tracks, remixes, and collaborations. The genre’s underground nature has allowed for creativity that resonates with listeners seeking something different from the mainstream. As the genre gains momentum, phonk continues to evolve and attract a growing community of artists and listeners who appreciate its raw aesthetic and its ability to capture the essence of a bygone era.
