From Apple Vision Pros to fitness trackers, wearable technology is now more futuristic than ever. It is not a new invention though: wearable technology such as smartwatches and pacemakers have been around for years. Nevertheless, today’s wearable tech sets it apart from its predecessors; these newer gadgets have incredible features that make their wearers feel like they’re in a sci-fi film. However, it also raises concerns about how much more this new technology is actually capable of.
Wearable tech has been used for many fascinating projects. For example, at the University of California, the Apple Vision Pros are being used by surgeons in operating rooms. They are able to complete surgeries with greater precision due to the device’s sharp video quality. Additionally, the British government is currently funding a study for developing AI on smartwatches to help determine people’s triggers to drug use.
Despite the positives, these new technologies are also capable of doing bad. Recently, a group of Harvard students coded a program onto Meta’s sunglasses that immediately collects information about someone you see in a matter of seconds. This program gives very personal details such as someone’s address, phone number or even their relatives. The students, AnhPhu Nguyen and Caine Ardayfio created the project to show the dangers of technology that people still believe to be impossible.
Wearable technology shows that a sci-fi reality is closer than many people think. While it has the potential to bring many benefits to society, it is still important that the public is aware of wearable tech’s dangers.
