During Lupercalia, young men would draw names of women from a lottery, forming temporary romantic pairings. This ritual was believed to promote fertility and ensure the health of livestock. 

The association between mid-February and romance deepened with the rise of Christianity. In the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I combined Lupercalia with the feast day of St. Valentine, a Christian martyr executed on February 14th. The exact identity of St. Valentine remains shrouded in mystery, with multiple legends attributing acts of kindness and love to him. One popular tale suggests that St. Valentine secretly performed marriages for young couples against the Roman Emperor Claudius II’s decree, which forbade young men from marrying to ensure they remained devoted soldiers. Imprisoned for his defiance, St. Valentine reportedly sent the first Valentine’s Day greeting to his beloved signed, “From your Valentine.”

The commercialization of Valentine’s Day began in the 19th century with the mass production of Valentine’s Day cards, initially handmade and later manufactured. The introduction of the postal service facilitated the exchange of love letters and cards between distant lovers, further popularizing the holiday.
