The highly anticipated sequel to the famous Disney movie, Moana, will be released in theatres near the end of this month on November 27th, 2024.
In the first movie, the protagonist Moana (voiced by Auli’i Cravalho) departs on a long journey filled with many obstacles to restore the heart of Te Fiti, which was stolen by Maui (voiced by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson), the antagonist. The two work together to rediscover it and the movie concludes with Moana placing the heart back and Te Fiti rescuing the island by using her powers to create life.
So far, only the trailer for the second movie has been released. The Rock, Auliʻi Cravalho and all other cast members from the first movie will be making a return in this sequel, with the addition of Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, an up-and-coming child actress, as Moana’s little sister Simea.
There isn’t a ton of detail surrounding the plot of Moana 2, however, in the description of a teaser trailer, Walt Disney Animation Studios wrote, “Moana 2 reunites Moana and Maui three years later for an expansive new voyage alongside a crew of unlikely seafarers. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.”
According to the trailer, we can expect Moana 2 to further develop along the lines of the last movie’s ending, where we can see Moana leading her people off their home island in search of new places, with Maui following above in the form of a hawk. In the latest movie, Moana is now 18 and the new chief of her people, with her dad being retired, and their people are prospering.
However, tensions arise when Moana’s official inauguration ceremony is hindered by a bolt of lightning striking the house, which is believed to be a curse from the ancestors. Moana, with the help of some new friends for this journey, now must make her way to a faraway island that could help her unite her people and break the curse.
Numerous children grew up watching Moana, and many look forward to seeing the sequel, which brings back nostalgic memories. Asya Taskiran, a movie fan, says, “I’m excited to see Moana older and having new adventures with Maui.”
While most are thrilled about the release of Moana 2, some, such as Sharini Arulrasa, another Moana fan, have concerns regarding the new animated movie. “The characters have changed and it feels like we don’t know them as we did before. I’m afraid of something changing because of how a lot of movies have been looking these past months.”
Although there are some mixed feelings about the release of the new movie, Moana 2 will certainly bring back fans of the original, both young and old.
