Are you interested in learning first aid? Want to join a council that’s all about giving back to the school and helping students in need? Join KERC now!
King’s Emergency Response Council is TDSB’s only student-led response team. KERC deals with all of King’s first aid emergencies within the school, providing members with hands-on experience. Through this council, KERC is able to educate members about health emergencies and how to respond to them, such as learning how to perform first aid. KERC also helps students gain volunteer experience by supervising events at school such as soccer games and more.
KERC has also led multiple successful events such as bake sales. An initiative KERC hosted last year was an event providing all King students to receive a free first-aid training course from the Red Cross. Many students became certified and learned many skills, making the event a massive success. KERC also hosted a first aid workshop, filled with fun games and activities where students were provided with the opportunity to meet a first responder. Avilash Thilagaselvan, a member of KERC shared:
“KERC allowed him and other members to learn more about how to help people succeed. It gave him a platform to make a difference in the community.”
However, it is important to acknowledge that joining this council doesn’t mean you have to pursue a career in medicine or science, as it offers much more than just that. Ayushi Anuprova, the president of King’s Emergency Response Council, stated:
“As King is a leadership school, KERC allows students to develop their leadership skills through coordinating and guiding emergency responses with confidence and precision. KERC provides members with crucial life-saving skills such as CPR, first aid, and emergency preparedness. By working closely with classmates, staff, and local emergency services, members build good teamwork and communication abilities. Joining KERC is not just about learning practical skills, it’s an opportunity to grow as a leader and make a meaningful impact in and out of R.H King.”
King’s Emergency Response Council takes place once a week on Tuesdays. New members are given the opportunity to meet new people within a positive environment and the opportunity to create long-lasting memories.
