Coachella: The surprising cost behind the festival

Coachella%3A+The+surprising+cost+behind+the+festival

Coachella is one of the most famous and exciting music and arts festivals, with people from around the world attending the festival each year. But all this fun comes with a price, and to some people, it might be something other than pretty.

Coachella, officially known as the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, is a music and arts festival held each year in the sunny state of California. Along with sculptures and art installations, the festival includes musical performances by musicians from a variety of genres, such as rock, pop, indie, hip-hop, and electronic dance music. Live music performances take place on multiple stages throughout the grounds. The festival is typically held in April across two back-to-back weekends that span over three days. This year’s festival features performances from Lana Del Rey, Tyler, the Creator, Doja Cat, No Doubt and more. Many A-list celebrities, like Taylor Swift and Hailey Emma Stone, also attended the event to see the performances.

There are 3 types of passes you can get for Coachella: general admission, general admission plus a shuttle, and VIP. The general admission package has 3 tiers ranging in price from $499-599; this allows you to enter the Coachella venue and the general admission camping grounds for the weekend. General admission plus shuttle package starts at $619 for tier one and goes up to $719 for tier 3; this package allows you entrance to the Coachella venue, general admission camping grounds, and the line shuttle buses that go from local hotels to the venue. Finally, there is the VIP pass with two tiers, $1069 for the first tier and $1269 for the second tier. This pass includes entrance to the venue, VIP areas, air-conditioned washrooms, special food and drinks vendors, shaded seating areas, and more.

Along with the base prices for tickets and passes there are additional costs such as hotels, hostels or Airbnb, transportation, food, plane tickets if you’re flying in, and much more. Altogether this might be too much for a person with an average salary to afford, and most times it is easier for people to enjoy their time at the event if they are sponsored by a brand/company or if they are a celebrity/influencer. Accommodation costs can be high, especially during peak demand. Food and drink prices reflect the event’s exclusivity, with vendors charging premium prices for snacks and refreshments. Transportation costs, including gas, flights, parking, and shuttle services, also add to the cost. The festival’s allure of bohemian-chic attire can also add an extra layer of financial strain for the average person as it is customary for attendees to dress up for the event.

Despite these grand costs and hardships for people throughout the festival, people are still eagerly looking forward to attending these events to see all their favourite artists and performers during the most popular music and arts festival.
