The RH King girls’ varsity basketball team’s season has unfortunately come to a close, but not without a historic east region championship title, and a never before played city semi-finals home game. That’s right, the girls varsity basketball team, impressively being made up of mostly tenth graders, for the first time ever in King’s basketball history, won the east region championship title. Played at Agincourt Collegiate, the game was an intense fight, with both teams battling neck and neck, but the Lions came out on top with a final score of 43-40. The girls had a 3-1 win streak in the regular season, only losing once to Agincourt leading up to the initial championship game. They trained exceptionally hard, led by team captain Carys McDonald, and came out victorious, making RH King prouder than ever.
Securing the east region championship title meant it was time to train for the city semi-finals home game against Lawrence Park Collegiate. The girls trained harder than ever before, learning new plays, and adapting to the upcoming opponent’s offence and defence. Before they knew it, game day had finally approached them. The girls sat in the gymnasium, watching the other semi-final game before them. The game ended, and it was time for the girls to warm up on the court. The gym started to fill up with students and parents alike, cramming to find a spot to watch the big game. Prior to the game, free tickets had been given out at lunch to students who wanted to watch, over 180 tickets given out. The game started and by halftime Lawrence Park led, but only by 2 points, leaving the score at 22-24. The girls battled hard, fighting for rebounds, as the score was extremely close the entire game. Ultimately Lawrence Park won, but not without a tight game. The final score was 48-52, an impressive finish to an incredible season.
The 2023 Girls Varsity Basketball team has left a legacy at King for the future generations of girls basketball. A big shout out to the seniors, Carys McDonald and Jasmine Musselman who played their last season, finishing with a historic boom. All the girls’ hard work could not have been done without the coaching of Dave Warrener and Jordyn Booth, and the help of the team managers, Kayla Porter and Rayne Davis. Congratulations girls to a phenomenal season, continue to make RH King proud in the upcoming years!
