Sports at King: Girls’ Ice Hockey

As the first semester comes to an end, so do the winter season sports. One obvious hot topic of the winter season is ice hockey.

This team became the most inclusive team I have ever been on. The improvement we saw throughout the season from the girls who have never played before was unbelievable. It’s easy to see a home game for most sports in Gym 1 and 2 on a Thursday night. However it really isn’t possible for students to catch a quick game of ice hockey without missing half a day of school, because there are no home games. For the girl’s ice hockey team the cheering of the crowds of students came from their hearts, the recognition of goals came from their cellys and most of all their final game was played with the knowledge they represented R.H. King with pride.

The Girls’ Ice Hockey team fought out their last game Tuesday night. While it was a disappointing loss the girls had fought an undeniably difficult season. With 5 girls who had never played hockey before joining the team, senior athlete Carly Page stepped up to provide them with old equipment to provide opportunities for these girls to play. The odds did not play out for these underdogs, but the effort was outstanding. All the athletes left their heart and soul on the ice as they fought to come on top. “This team became the most inclusive team I have ever been on. While the results had underrepresented how much improvement the girls had made throughout the season, the girls had shown true King spirit. In the 2022-2023 season King had seven senior athletes who led the team with great leadership, Carly Page, Sandra Raymon, Lorelle McWatt, Rhiannon Carr, Robyn 

Raine, Summer Lindeman and Erini Carrol. While the season was difficult and overbearing at times, these great senior girls made it their mission to show true King colors out on the ice. Team spirit, determination, and going out to have fun is what King is, and that’s just what these girls did. These girls opened a door of opportunity for female athletes to come, play on ice even without a serious background in the sport. They showed, with heart and practice, anyone is capable with a team to back them up. Huge congratulations to these accomplished women, and huge thank you to the Coach, Ms. Clish for the undeniable effort it took to put this group of underdogs and talented players together. Special shout out to Summer Lindeman, and Sandra Raymond, the goalies, and protectors of the net, great job out there girls.
