Locke & Key: a perfectly timed ending

September 22, 2022

The third and final season of Locke & Key was released on August 10th, 2022. While fans of the show are disappointed that it has come to an end, it was a perfectly timed ending. Spoilers ahead!

Many shows drag on for seasons upon seasons with repetitive storylines, resulting in uninterested fans. This is not the case for Locke & Key.

The show follows the Locke family, post the death of their father, as they move to live in their dad’s childhood home, Keyhouse. The kids soon find keys with magical properties and unfortunately, demons who want to steal the keys for their own evil purposes.

The first two seasons of the show focused on the dead father (Rendell) and his connection with the keys throughout his adolescence. As his kids learn more about his past, a perfect amount of suspense and mystery is included into the storyline, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.

From grief to addiction to relationships, the show allows viewers to connect to the characters through personal experiences. Even though fans may not have magic keys hidden in their homes, they are still able to understand the struggles the Locke family faces.

The final season of Locke & Key perfectly wraps up the entire storyline. The family learns to let go of their past, by using the keys to help deal with their grief. They eventually fight their last battle with the demons in search of the keys. Rather than continuing the cycle of the demon’s attempting to steal the keys, the screenplay writer decided to end the cycle one and for all. The family lets go of the keys and starts a new future without the hassle of secrecy and always having to look behind their shoulders’ for trouble.

However, in the last episode there was a slight hint to the fact that not all the keys were gone. This leaves an open ending allowing the show to be continued later down the line if more ideas are present.

Locke & Key is available to stream on Netflix.
