10 Non-Scary Movies to watch this Halloween

Let’s be honest, fall is the season we’ve all been waiting for. The anticipation of coming back to school, the aesthetics of the leaves falling, wearing sweaters, lighting candles, and dressing up for Halloween. Top it off with the nostalgia of going trick-or-treating around your neighbourhood and fall easily becomes the favourite season. To get you into the fall spirit, here are 10 non-scary movies to watch this October, for the Halloween enthusiasts who prefer the less-spooky.

1. Goosebumps

When Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette) moves to the small town of Madison Delaware, he unintentially meets his neighbour Hannah (Odeya Rush) who has an overprotective father, R.L. Stine (Jack Black). Hannah’s father tries to keep Hannah from Zach making Zach more curious about this mysterious family. While trying to learn about Hannah, Zach accidentally releases monsters from the iconic Goosebumps series. R.L. Stine had written the series to cope with bullying and now it is up to this unlikely trio to work together and restore all of the monsters back to their books without more monsters coming to life. This movie was released in 2015 and is great for fans who love thrilling movies. Goosebumps is avalibale to stream on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video with a subscription.


2. HalloweenTown

Although Marnie’s (Kimberly Brown) mother tries to conceal the fact that they come from a family of witches, when her Grandma Aggie (Debbie Reynolds) comes to town, the cat slips out of the bag. The three siblings Marnie, Dylan and Sophie follow their grandmother to her home in HalloweenTown, filled with the supernatural to start their witch training. But when evil starts to arise within Halloweentown and a battle takes place between good and bad, Marnie and her siblings must find the ingredients to activate Merlin’s wand and save the town. This movie was released in 1998 and is a classic when it comes to Halloween movies. It can be streamed on Disney+ with a subscription.

3. The Corpse Bride

Anxious Victor (Johnny Depp) is to be wed to sweet Victoria (Emily Watson) through an arranged marriage set up by their respective families and although the pair have never met, Victor and Victoria instantly fall in love. While Victor practices his vows in the forest, he slips the ring onto a tree branch which unknowingly is the hand of the Corpse Bride Emily, (Helena Bonham-Carter). Emily unfortunately misunderstands Victor’s intention and believing he wants to marry her drags Victor into the world of the dead. Victor now has the choice between returning to the living to reunite with Victoria or staying with the dead to be with Emily. This movie was released in 2005 and is perfect for the fan who loves a touching fall romance, plus, how can you go wrong when Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter are together! 4. BeetleJuice

After passing away in a car accident, Barbra (Geena Davis) and her husband Adam (Alec Baldwin) are left confused as they become ghosts left to haunt their own house and its new owners. They cannot leave their current house, and they cannot pass into the afterlife, but are just stuck as spirits. As they attempt to scare away the new home owners, they befriend the owners daughter, Lydia (Winona Ryder) and unfortunately also draw the attention of BeetleJuice (Michael Keaton), an exorcist who is determined on ‘helping’ them, but really puts everyone else in danger. The couple now has the choice between saving Lydia from marrying Beetlejuice or getting the wretched family out of their house. Beetlejuice was released in 1988 and is great for anyone looking to have a laugh. You can stream Beetlejuice on Netflix with a subscription.

5. Twitches

Twin witches, Alex (Tia Mowry) and Camryn (Tamera Mowry) were seperated at birth away from their Kingdom to grow up on earth and live normal lives. Alex comes from a working class household, and Camryn comes from a wealthy adoptive family. The two accidentally meet on the 21st birthday and instantly don’t exactly see eye to eye. But soon they realize that their birth mother and beloved Kingdom are both in danger. It is up to the twins to discover their magic and get the answers they’ve been searching for in order to save the Kingdom. Twitches was released in 2005 and is a staple essential for the fantasy film lovers. You can stream Twitches on Disney+ with a subscription.

6. Coraline

After moving to the boring old Pink Palace from her home in Michigan, Coraline Jones (Dakota Fanning) discovers a hidden doorway in her home while exploring. As she pesters her mother to open the door, she realizes that the door has been closed off and leads nowhere. Disapointed, she heads to bed but is suddenly awaken by jumping mice who lead her back to the same door once more. This time as she opens it up, the door transports her into the ‘perfect’ world. In the new perfect world, her house is bigger, her friends from Michigan are with her, the food is better and even her parents are nicer to her. Her perfect mother introduces herself as Coraline’s ‘other mother’ and looks exactly like the real version except she has buttons for eyes. Every night, Coraline returns to her ‘perfect’ world as her new ‘other mother’ gets more intrigued with her and wants her to stay forever. Coraline realizes something isn’t right and befriends her neighbours and a particularily mysterious cat along the way, to help her escape the other world. Coraline was released in 2009 and is perfect for anyone who wants to be creeped out this Halloween. It can be streamed on Netflix with a subscription

7. Hocus Pocus

In 1693, three witches known as the Sanderson Sisters, were punished for practicing dark witchcraft and were sent to be executed in Salem. These evil sisters lured a young girl into the forest, took away her youth to replenish their own, and transfigured her brother into a black cat for trying to stop them. 300 years later in 1993, Max Dennison (Omri Katz) and his sister Dani (Thora Birch) move to Salem with their family and meet a new friend, who Max really likes, Allison (Vinessa Shaw). Allison tells the siblings about a folklore story about the three notorious witches, and that if someone lights the black candle from their home, the sisters will return to life. Max decides to break into the abandoned home to impress Allison by lighting the candle, but soon regrets it as he unleashes the three Sanderson Sisters. The withches have until sunrise to achieve immortality and will stop at nothing to get it. Now its up to Max, Dani and Allison to save Salem from the Sanderson Sisters. Hocus Pocus was released in 1993 and can be streamed on Disney+ with a subscription.

8. Hubie Halloween

Hubie Dubois (Adam Sandler) has been made fun of his entire life by both children and adults. Even though he is kind and generous, he has always been treated like the town clown. Despite how people see him, every year on Halloween he continues to go out and teach the children about proper trick-or-treating ettiquete as he loves his hometown of Salem. This year in particular Hubie gets invovled in a murder investigation right on October 31st involving a werewolf, an escaped mental hospital patient and and some missing townspeople. It’s now up to Hubie to prove that it wasn’t him and find out who the real murder is. Hubie Halloween released in 2020 has a cast of so many familiar faces including Cameron Boyce, Paris Berlec, Noah Schnapp, Julie Bowen, Peyton List, China Anne McClain, Karan Brar, Kelli Berglund, Kevin James, Maya Rudolph and so many more. Hubie Halloween can be watched on Netflix with a subscription.

9. Edward Scissorhands

Edward (Johnny Depp) is an uncomplete invention, created by an inventor. Edward looks and acts like a regular person except for the fact that he has scissors for hands, meaning that he will cut whatever he touches. After Edward’s creator passes away, he is taken in by a family who takes pity on him and his large, heavy, metal hands. Now although Edward looks incredibly scary, he truly is a gentle soul and over time he steals the heart of his new family’s daughter Kim (Winona Ryder), who is dating the neighbourhood bully. Edward becomes recognized in the community for being amazing at trimming hedges and cutting hair, but when he is accused of a crime that he did not commit, and all of his so called ‘friends’ leave his side, it is up to Edward and Kim to prove he is inncocent. Edward Scissorhands was released in 1990 and is another fall romance that shatters the hearts of all its viewers. It can be streamed on Hulu with a subscription.

10. Knives Out

On his 85th birthday, Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer), a wealthy author of famous murder mystery books, invites all of his extended family to celerbrate with him and to also settle his affairs. The party goes well but the next morning Harlan’s housekeeper finds him dead in his study. Private Investigator Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) comes around to the mansion to ask everyone at the party about their personal whereabouts and about their recollections of what happened at the party. The detective takes a liking to Harlans’ nurse, Marta, who throws up everytime she lies, and asks her to help him find the killer in this investigation. As the police get more statements and solve more clues of the murder, they uncover that the family isn’t as well put together as they seem. Knives Out was released in 2019 and can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video with a subscription
