November 30, 2020
Canadian superstar Shawn Mendes opens up about his journey to fame, loved ones and exhausting struggles; in an all-new Netflix documentary “Shawn Mendes In Wonder”, released on November 23rd, 2020. Viewers follow Shawn on his tour to over 106 shows around the world, while taking a raw look at Shawn’s life through his own eyes.
“Shawn Mendes In Wonder” gives us a close-up view of the star’s relationship with singer Camilla Cabeo, 23; as well as never before seen footage from Mendes’s childhood, his home in Pickering, Ontario, and his childhood friends, who’ve stuck with him all along the way. This 83-minute documentary starts off with clips of Shawn as a child, singing covers to famous songs on the app Vine. As a child, Mendes would often think he needed a band to make him famous, and that he wasn’t good enough by himself. His sister Aaliyah often recalls Shawn not wanting to ever become famous. She says, “I asked him if he wanted to be famous one day, and he shut the whole idea down so fast. He was like, ‘No, I don’t want to be famous. It seems awful.”
Throughout the documentary, the audience also gets a glimpse of Shawn and Camilla’s relationship, and career together. The two stars met at an Austin Mahone concert in 2014, where Cabello and her former girl group, “Fifth Harmony” were opening. Mendes and Cabello became friends that year and announced their relationship together in 2019. “For the past, like, four years, just being friends and not being able to see each other very often to finally being able to be together, she was always there to look out for me as a human being,” Shawn admits, “She’s got my back, and I think that’s what your partner is for.” The star also reveals that every song he has ever written was always about Camilla, and that definitely made viewers gush. During a trip to New York, Shawn recalls telling Camilla, “Everything is about you. They’ve always been about you,”.

About two thirds into the documentary Shawn loses his voice right before his concert in São Paulo, he takes a moment to reflect on his life. The singer opens up about how he is so incredibly grateful for the fame, but at times he misses his old life back in Pickering. Fans can understand how the star is feeling as he missed out on his teen years with the newfound stardom at the age of 15. Mendes says, “I’m so grateful. I love these performances. I’ve never had more fun in my life, but at the same time, I just want to hang with my parents and watch movies, drive around a suburb and lay on a soccer field and, you know, smoke a joint and stare at stars with my friends and, like, eat some beef jerky. … I miss that right now. It’s pretty intense all the time.”
“Shawn Mendes In Wonder” was released not only to give fans an insider view but also to promote Shawn’s new album, “Wonder”. It will be his fourth album since 2015, and fans are already crazed about it. You can stream the album on all music-listening platforms on December 4th, 2020 when it will be released by Island Records, and you can watch the documentary “Shawn Mendes In Wonder” on Netflix with a subscription.
