With Halloween approaching, many people will inevitably leave their costume planning until the last minute. For students at R.H. King, this often stems from struggling to come up with creative ideas and feeling pressured to be original.
Students were asked about what goes into consideration when deciding on different costumes. A grade 12 student, Mahima Alli, states, “I want my costume to be relevant enough for people to understand, but not something that’s gonna be overdone. I still want to be original and creative.” Silvia Roy agreed, adding, “The most important thing for most of us is wanting to be original. I worked really hard to fully commit to my costume and make sure it wouldn’t be half-baked.” Another grade 12 student, Janani Yoganathan, says, “There are so many different movies, TV shows, or niche internet references I can choose for my Halloween costume. It’s really hard to narrow down to what I want to do.”
If these thoughts are relatable, then worry no longer! Here are some original, trendy, and creative costume ideas for this year:
- Sonny Angel

Sonny angels are small, collectible, baby figurines with different headgear for each collectible figurine, like animal ears or different hats. They have taken the internet and Gen Z hearts by storm over the past year. A unique, simple, creative, and easy costume to wear!
2. Clark Kent and Lois Lane

One of the most successful and highest earning movies of the year, as well as one of DC’s oldest and most well-loved couples, Clark and Lois! It’s easy to go the extra mile and get the full Superman costume, or keep it simple and choose to reference one of Superman’s most iconic comic and movie scenes, the suit under the white button-up. Overall, this costume is a classic and quite easy to put together.
3. Berry Besties

A nostalgic throwback to a favourite childhood show, Strawberry Shortcake! A costume that works for a group or an individual, that’s both easy to DIY and put together using clothes students will most likely already own.
4. Coraline

Three costumes from the movie, Coraline, a classic childhood horror movie. For a costume that’s more on the scarier side, dressing as the “other-mother” would be a perfect choice for you. All that’s needed is a spotted dress, face and body paint, and finally, button-shaped sunglasses to achieve the spooky and eerie look. If you’re looking for a costume on the more tame side, two great options are Coraline and Wybie, which are creative and easy costumes to DIY.
5. Van Gogh and a Starry Night

A creative individual costume or a romantic couple’s costume, dressing up as either the art piece or the artist, offers an imaginative and distinctive costume to stand out this Halloween.
Ultimately, the previous points can be used as a reference for students when creating or deciding on a costume. Halloween is meant to be fun, and the pressure to have a “good” costume shouldn’t rob students of this positive childhood experience!
