From Wednesday to Thursday last week, King’s East-wing experienced a temporary power shut off. However, contrary to student belief, it was not due to a power outage, but as a safety precaution following some flooding in the boiler room. The decision was made to prevent electrical hazards while maintenance crews addressed the flooding.
Without access to projectors and powerpoints, many teachers had to quickly adapt their lesson plans to a more old-school method. Heading back to the basics, teachers dusted off chalkboards, and went screenless. Some had to briefly take notes on their lesson plan before starting the class.
Some students, on the other hand, seemed more concerned about the heat than the lessons. “It was so hot in the classroom without any fans on,” says Grade 12, Mahima Ali, who had her D period in the powered off Writer’s Craft classroom.
However, after heat and begrudging use of chalkboards, power returned on Friday thanks to the caretaking team and TDSB trades. Ms. Chang gave out a special “thank you” to all staff and students whose learning was affected.
